Hammering of Nails and PitonsDipartimento di Ingegneria Strutturale, Universita di Pisa, I-56126 Pisa, Italy Hammering nails into timber is amongst the oldest techniques, but understanding the accompanying mechanics is difficult. The fixing of nails into cracks is also now common in mountaineering both to aid safety and to facilitate climbing.
Key Words: elastic and plastic contact
